Karen Bissenden
Karen Bissenden survived post secondary education with her curiosity and creativity intact and has written with varying degrees of intensity for several decades. She has written for magazines --including 4 years with the Canadian Quilter--editing, interviews, product reviews, had a newspaper column, and designed and wrote for an environmental issues newsletter. Writing has included non-fiction, creative non-fiction and fiction, though perhaps the dividing lines are slender. She writes poetry about the minutiae and the magnificent, the serious and the bent, for lovers and about losers. I Am Not My Poems. (Incite Publishing) was published in 2000.
Karen spent 14 years in the Fitness & Health industry, including managing her own fitness and consulting company with contracts for programs for all ages. Later, with no training, she made two successful attempts at raising children. She taught quilting, and creative fabric use but recently has operated a home based business selling one-of-kind totes, bags and purses.
She was involved with the Gifted Children's Association of BC for 17 years, 10 as chair with the responsibilities of chairing conferences and regular events for gifted children and parents. She initiated the Salmon Arm Grebe Festival which she co-ordinated for two years.
Jumbled in the basement is evidence of several winter sports, a kayaking dream, and a membership in the outrigging club. Hiking and running shoes line up by the door where the cat shreds the laces. The bike is always ready to go. Karen can be found under weeds in her organic garden, or sprawled gorging on books. In her studio she creates one-of-a kind dimensional fabric art.
For two years she was Central Rep for the BC Federation of Writers and for the past 6 years she has co-ordinated the Young Writers' contest to support writing for students K - 12 as part of the Shuswap International Writers' Festival. Karen has been involved with the Festival since its inception and is presently on the board of directors. She's an advocate of serious volunteerism, abandoned her TV and doesn't drive.
